We are the Roses, living on a beautiful spot of soil in the Pacific Northwest. Mitch moved to Oregon from Minneapolis, Gina was born and raised in the PNW. We took this photo on a family trip to Minnesota, with our four girls together. Mitch works in the Hospice industry, helping people through the whole process. He is a blessing to the people he serves. He grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota and misses his family and the lakes, but loves his PNW life. Gina is a designer of events, food forest landscapes and grounded interiors. She has served as the florist for weddings across 50 United States and several countries. These days she serves closer to home, but does still network with artists near and far. Olivia is living in LA, working toward her dreams of big time writing. Sophia is a licensed Aesthetician, and just moved to a college town because it was cheap to live with friends and she thought it would be fun. So far it has been. Gianna is in 7th grade and is a gifted athlete, engaged student, and thoughtful citizen. We are too busy for anything else because of her tournaments. ;) Mia is right behind Gianna with sports. She loves to garden and cook. She is the fastest mess maker, and also the fastest tidier in the house! She is an animal lover, amazing friend, and advanced athlete.
Gina has been studying Regenerative Agriculture and Permaculture. The whole family has been surrounded by her class work and online workshops. Everyone is on board. We have plans to support our family through growth and products from our land. We want to use our experience as a way to inspire other small land owners to be regenerative, or at least more responsible.
Mia helps while everyone is off to other things. Chief always keeps an eye on the surroundings. He has literally saved us a couple times. We experiment with gardening techniques. Regenerative being the goal, we're not always perfect. Behind is an experiment to cover a blackberry pile/ old compost pile with recycled piece of landscape fabric and plant directly into it. If we had done more to add mulch, it could have worked better all around, but it was amazing for the zuchinni and mini moon pumpkins we grew! Always a work in progress. Always learning and redesigning. Working with what we have. So grateful for this soil and this opportunity to be productive and strive to understand and work with nature.
Delicious memories are made in the garden. The girls came in and made kale chips, salad and tea. We have such deer pressure that we have an enclosed deer proof(ish) garden. This past season we grew all of our greens in this garden; mustards, kales, spinach, and chards. We grew potatoes, beans, corn and flowers that deer love, like violas. The outside parameter is planted with artichokes. This past growing season we had some great wins, and plenty of learning experiences.
